58-year-old woman dies by suicide in Rishra after name missing from final voter list

A tragic incident has been reported from Rishra in Hooghly district, where a 58-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after reportedly being distressed over her name missing from the final voter list. The deceased, identified as Minti Sen, was a resident of booth numbers 44 and 45 under the Rishra gram panchayat area. Her hanging body was recovered from her house late on Saturday night.

According to family members, Minti Sen’s name had appeared in the 2002 voter list, but both her and her son’s names were missing from the final voter list published after the SIR process. The omission reportedly caused deep anxiety and fear, as she believed it could lead to serious consequences, including the possibility of deportation. Following the incident, local Trinamool Congress leaders visited the family on Sunday morning. They expressed strong anger over the situation and blamed the authorities for the circumstances that allegedly created fear among residents regarding the voter list revision process. The bereaved family members were left devastated by the incident.

This is not the first such case reported in recent weeks. Since the announcement of the SIR in the state, several allegations of suicide attempts and deaths linked to anxiety over voter list issues have surfaced from different districts. Concerns over missing names and confusion about the revision process have triggered distress among some voters, raising serious questions about the impact of the ongoing electoral exercise.
